Nicolae Comănescu went to Reșița again and not only to visit but also to go to school 🙂, to the PITTNER SCHOOL. And it was not with an empty hand, it came with a sneak preview of the SCRAP METAL KABOOM ORCHESTRA BY NICOLAE COMĂNESCU exhibition – an exhibition that will have its opening at the end of September 2021.
On Furnalelor Street in Reșița, at number 13B, is the building of the former PITTNER School, a building declared a historical monument since 2015, which has unfortunately reached an advanced state of degradation, but which with little chance, in the next 3-4 years, will be restored through the project “Restoration and revitalization of cultural heritage Exhibition and event center Pittner School, Resita Municipality” which is carried out by Resita City Hall, Euroland Banat Association and Listahópurinn RÖSK Association in Iceland.
Pittner School before renovation
This is what the Pittner School will look like after the renovation
The place chosen by the painter Nicolae Comănescu for this sneaak preview was not accidental at all because the colors used to make the works were obtained by mixing materials from this building. On a previous visit, Nicolae Comanescu collected raw brick dust (elsewhere called adobe), red burnt brick dust (this building was built quite interestingly – made of raw brick and several times was interspersed, for strength. , a layer of normal brick) plus slag dust (industrial residue from obtaining iron in old furnaces).
Nicolae Comănescu is not at the first experience of this kind because he has used this technique of mixing and obtaining color tones on other occasions – he painted with dust from Bucharest and in the series of works with Moara lui Assan he used earth and dust from there.
He was born in Pitesti in November 1968 and graduated from the Academy of Arts in Bucharest, the class of Professor Ion Sălișteanu in 1998. Since the Academy of Arts – 1997 – he founded with other artists the ROSTOPASCA Group listed as “the liveliest nucleus of young artists in Romania”. Angela Bontaș, Nicolae Comănescu, Dumitru Gorzo and Alina Pentac were part of the group, and later Alina Buga, Florin Tudor and Mona Vatamanu joined.
The ROSTOPACA group operated between 1997 and 2001, and during this period Nicolae Comănescu’s works circulated, together with the other members of the group, or with other Romanian or foreign artists, in exhibitions presented to the European public (in Greece, Germany, Italy , England) and the American one (in New York).
Nicolae Comănescu is one of the most prolific contemporary artists with over 20 personal exhibitions and many group exhibitions and for us residents of Resita it is a joy that he was involved in promoting the rehabilitation project of the Pittner School in Resita. At Sneak preview, an event that took place on August 1, the painter stated that the works brought on this occasion will be donated to Pittner School to be exhibited inside it upon completion of the restoration / rehabilitation project and transformation into “Exhibition and Events Center ”.
The total value of the rehabilitation project is 10,962,231 lei, of which 80% is non-reimbursable financing, and 20%, own eligible contribution from the applicant – Resita City Hall – and the two partner associations in the project – Euroland Banat from Resita and Listhópurinn Rösk in Akureyri, Iceland. – Images from the press conference launching the project.
Resita is in the year in which it celebrates 250 years of industry, so in the short time he spent this time in Resita, Nicolae Comanescu had the opportunity to visit the Museum of Amateur Filmmakers and participate in two photography exhibitions – one with industrial images and one with images from the area that was demolished for the development of the former Iron and Steel Works.
